India: Tamil Nadu Pushes for Offshore Wind

Tamil Nadu is eager to exploit its vast wind resources, both onshore and offshore.

With 7,055 MW of wind power capacity, which is about 40% of all wind power capacity in the country, the State is seeking to install 6,000 MW by 2017.

On that path, the State has formed a committee to examine the prospects of offshore wind energy in the entire country. The Tamilnadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is considering assigning C-WET to assess the wind power density on the coastal area.

Proposals for development of offshore wind projects have already been submitted by four companies, while offshore wind potential of Tamil Nadu is estimated to be as high as 1,27,428 MW, The Hindu Business Line informs.
