Global Maritime to Decommission TetraSpar Floater Offshore Norway

The consortium behind the TetraSpar Demonstrator, consisting of TEPCO Renewable Power, RWE, and Stiesdal Offshore, has appointed Global Maritime to support the decommissioning of the demonstration project in Norway.

The TetraSpar Demonstrator, which has been in operation at the Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre) site offshore Karmøy since 2021, consists of Stiesdal Offshore’s TetraSub floating foundation carrying a 3.6 MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbine.

The decommissioning marks the final phase of the project, following the completion of its demonstration objectives, and will enable detailed inspection of the submerged structure after nearly five years of operation, providing valuable input to the verification of the TetraSub foundation, according to Global Maritime.

Under the agreement with the TetraSpar Demonstrator consortium, Global Maritime will be in charge of both offshore and onshore decommissioning, with the scope of work encompassing end-to-end project management, engineering, procurement, and operational execution.

The offshore phase of the decommissioning will begin with the disconnection, retrieval, and handling of key subsea components. This includes the inter-array cable (IAC) and the station keeping system (SKS), both of which will be disconnected, recovered, and prepared for transport, with materials directed toward appropriate recycling streams.

Following these activities, the complete TetraSpar structure will be towed to a sheltered deepwater location where it will be temporarily moored. Subsequent offshore works will involve keel handling and controlled deballasting operations, before the structure is brought into harbour, where both the keel and floater will be docked.

Once onshore, the decommissioning effort will focus on the systematic dismantling and recycling of all major components. The wind turbine will be disassembled, with the nacelle and rotor transported to original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-designated facilities, while the tower sections will be processed for recycling. The keel and floater structures will also undergo dismantling, the removal of marine growth and the segregation of hazardous materials, with all recovered materials from these structures to be sorted and recycled as well.

Global Maritime will carry out the onshore scope in partnership with Semco Maritime as a subcontractor at its Hanøytangen yard, providing specialist capabilities in material handling, waste management, and recycling, the TetraSpar Demonstrator decommissioning contractor says.
