Borkum Riffgrund 2 Nears Finish Line

Ørsted is expecting a faster ramp-up of generation from the 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm due to good progress on offshore construction which will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2018.

So far, 39 out of the 56 MHI Vestas 8MW wind turbines have passed the 240 hours test, the developer said.

”We expect the wind farm to be fully commissioned by early December, weather permitting,” Henrik Poulsen, Ørsted’s CEO, said during a conference call on the results for the first nine months of 2018.

The wind farm produced first power in early August. The turbine installation at the site some 57km off the north-west coast of Germany was completed in early September.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 is the first offshore wind farm in Germany to feature 8MW wind turbines and suction bucket foundations.

Once fully operational, the wind farm will boost Ørsted’s operating offshore wind capacity in Germany to over 1.3GW.

The wind farm will be managed from Ørsted’s operations & management centre in Norden-Norddeich.

In addition to Ørsted, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) is equally involved in the project.
