HIE Appoints Area Manager for Orkney

HIE Appoints Area Manager for Orkney

Orkney’s Head of Operations at Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has been appointed as the agency’s new Area Manager for the islands, and is taking up the role in the new year.

Graeme Harrison came to the islands in 1984, while he was working for the Royal Bank of Scotland.

He has been with HIE since 1992 and is delighted to be taking on the top job from Ken Grant, who is moving into a specialised Oil and Gas role within the agency.

Alex Paterson, HIE Chief Executive, said: “Orkney is one of our most diverse and successful local economies in the Highlands and Islands, notable for long standing achievements in culture, creative industries, tourism and food and drink, and more recently for powering ahead as a true world leader in marine energy.

“In Graeme, we have appointed an Area Manager who fully understands the entire range of opportunities and challenges currently facing the islands, and is committed to helping build a positive future for Orkney.

“He and his team are already doing a great job, and will play a central role in moving economic and community growth in Orkney to the next level.”

Graeme agrees that teamwork is vital, both locally and across the wider global network which HIE has access to. He commented: “I’m really looking forward to taking over the reins from Ken and know that I come to this job with a strong legacy and a team who are all focused on how they can deliver the best results.

“For me, this is the ideal job. I love life in Orkney and, knowing the breadth of potential we have here, it will be a privilege to work with Orkney businesses and communities to help them grow and fulfil their ambitions.

“There are huge opportunities in the marine renewables field in particular, and part of my role will be to support efforts in the international marketplace to build upon the innovative and trailblazing reputation that Orkney has.

“Within Orkney, collaborative working is at the heart of all that we do, so I’m looking forward to working with Orkney Islands Council, and other community partners to take advantage of new opportunities.”
