UK: ABPmer to Provide Specialist Advice for Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon

ABPmer, a leading marine environmental consultancy, has recently been commissioned by Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Ltd to support the preparation of the Environmental Statement for the planned Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon.

The proposed land-attached lagoon is situated in Swansea Bay, with the aim of generating significant renewable energy from the predictable tidal cycle. The lagoon will be connected to the National Grid and last for over 100 years.

The next stage of the project’s development requires a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). ABPmer has been appointed to lead the coastal processes, marine ecology and marine mammal elements of the EIA. The studies will consider the potential effects on the environment during the construction, long term operation and decommissioning phases of the lagoon.

Bill Cooper, Managing Director at ABPmer said: “We are delighted to be working on such an exciting renewable energy development; we are recognised industry specialists in providing such impact assessments. We believe we can provide significant added value to the project as a result of our extensive previous involvement in similar studies. We have been supporting the offshore renewables sector with technical and scientific research and advice for more than a decade.

ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd is a leading provider of specialist expertise to the marine renewable energy sector. The organisation has undertaken work for developers as well as led several strategic reviews. From pre-consent to operation, ABPmer provides support services throughout the project life cycle.
