Germany: BASF Launches New Coating Material Technologies for Wind Energy

The world’s biggest chemical company in the world, headquartered in Ludwigshafen, BASF, has launched two new coating material technologies for the wind energy industry: RELEST Wind Leading Edge and RELEST Wind RepKit.

The new coating system RELEST® Wind Leading Edge improves the economic efficiency of wind turbines. It provides excellent protection of the front and leading edge of the rotor blade from erosion. Thanks to its extremely high erosion resistance against rain, sand and hail and its outstanding properties RELEST Wind Leading Edge is therefore particularly useful for offshore turbines as it extends their life span significantly and increases the service intervals. Moreover, the material offers major advantages in the application process: flexible film thicknesses are possible during the coating process, and the short drying time ensures high production efficiency.

Through its Industrial Coatings Solutions business BASF supplies complete coating and repair solutions for wind turbines. Its blade coatings have been tried and tested in real life for decades. Flexible systems for plant maintenance are available today that avoid the expensive need to replace entire rotor blades and minimize turbine downtimes. RELEST® Wind RepKit is applicable for both onshore and offshore wind energy plants.

The new RELEST Wind RepKit has been designed for stationary use on the ground or on wind turbines.
