UK: Costain Signs Health and Safety Accord

Costain Signs Health and Safety Accord

Costain has signed up to a health and safety accord designed to set standards for the offshore wind and marine energy sector.

The agreement was signed for Costain by Chief Executive, Andrew Wyllie, and on behalf of Gravitas Offshore, the consortium comprising Costain, Hochtief and Arup, by Managing Director, Environment, Alan Kay.

Alan is a Director of Gravitas Offshore, which is proposing a concrete flask-shaped structure that sits on the seabed as a base for offshore wind turbines.

Costain is one of the first construction industry participants to put its name to the accord, which is sponsored by RenewableUK, the trade association for the sector: “We’re signing up to demonstrate our commitment to and support for health and safety excellence in the offshore renewables sector,” said Director of Renewables, Colin Duff.

The accord was drawn up by RenewableUK and is the result of active engagement with key stakeholders including the Health & Safety Executive and The Crown Estate, which owns the seabed inside UK territorial waters.

Meanwhile, Colin reports good progress with Gravitas Offshore, with its base design having aroused considerable interest in the offshore energy industry.
