Wescott Successfully Completes Coating Repair Campaign at East Anglia One (EA1) Offshore Wind Farm

Over a two-year period, Wescott Industrial Services – specialists in integrated industrial solutions such as access and protective coatings – successfully delivered a major coating repair campaign on all 102 Main Access Platform (MAP) cranes on the East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm.

The campaign was carried out on behalf of ScottishPower Renewables, ensuring safe and efficient operations while meeting the highest quality standards.

East Anglia ONE, situated 43 kilometres off the Suffolk coast, has the capacity to produce up to 714 MW of clean energy, enough to power the equivalent of around 700,000 homes.

Technical Achievements

The project implemented an innovative multi-coat repair system across all 102 Cranes, that allowed application outside of the traditional relative humidity and dew point limitations. This approach significantly increased productivity and enabled the teams to maximise output during the available weather windows for offshore work.

To provide safe access to unreachable areas, such as the crane booms, rope access techniques were also employed to apply a single-coat repair system, this approach eliminated the need for scaffold & lifting equipment hereby lowering overall campaign risks and improving operational efficiency.

Operations and Safety

The campaign spanned two years, with an average of 20 personnel deployed daily to the wind farm during each campaign season. Successful delivery required detailed coordination across all teams, integrating SIMOPS to streamline workflows while maintaining high standards in blasting and painting operations.

Two dedicated hybrid Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) ensured the safe and efficient transport of personnel and equipment throughout the campaign. A strong emphasis was placed on safety and environmental protection, resulting in zero Lost Time Incidents (LTIs) over a total of 55,867 offshore working hours.
Collaboration with SPR

The campaign was delivered alongside ScottishPower Renewables, whose commitment to operational excellence and safety culture was central to the project’s success. This collaboration ensured all activities were aligned with SPR’s values and long-term asset management strategy.

Max Wall, Senior Project Manager at ScottishPower Renewables, said: ”Wescott delivered this comprehensive campaign to a high standard, with an excellent safety record throughout. A large number of locations and people were involved in this work daily and collaboration and planning were key to ensure smooth coordination and efficiency. We were particularly impressed with Wescott’s flexibility and proactive approach to implementing improvements based on lessons learned. The successful completion of this project marks a significant milestone, and we are proud of the collaboration, quality and safe performance during this campaign.”
