South Koreans Developing New Floating Wind Tech

South Korea’s SK Engineering & Construction and POSCO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a new floating offshore wind foundation.

The companies will work together on the basic design for the foundation, water tank testing, production of the prototype, as well as demonstration.

SK E&C said it will provide the core technologies for the development of the foundation, while POSCO will provide the steel materials adequate for the domestic marine environment.

The plan is to carry out a demonstration test in 2023 at a 136 MW project offshore Ulsan.

As reported earlier this year, SK E&C is taking part in a circa EUR 6 billion project to develop an 8.2 GW wind complex offshore the Sinan County, South Jeolla Province.

In November 2020, the company signed a technical cooperation agreement with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction for floating offshore wind projects.
