EEW Group has contracted Hutchinson Engineering Ltd for the fabrication and on-site assembly of Suspended Internal Platforms (SIPs) for the Hornsea Two offshore wind project.

The Cheshire-based company is in charge of providing 30 SIPs, each weighing 10t and towering 12m high, that will be suspended inside the transition pieces.

In June, Ørsted, the developer of the project, ordered 30 transition pieces from EEW Special Pipe Constructions, who will also manufacture 165 monopiles for the wind farm.

The remaining 135 transition pieces will be produced by Denmark’s Bladt Industries.

“By working collaboratively with our Tier 1 suppliers and local suppliers for the past 10 years, we have been able to provide opportunities for competitive UK suppliers,” said Peter Clusky, Senior Supply Chain Development Manager for Ørsted.

“Hutchinson’s successful award on this contract by EEW SPC will see UK secondary steel used in the UK fabricated Transition Pieces being delivered by EEW OSB on Teesside for the Hornsea 2 project.”

Hornsea Project Two will comprise 165 Siemens Gamesa 8MW turbines, first of which are scheduled to be installed in 2021 about 89km off the coast of Yorkshire. The 1.4GW offshore wind project is expected to be completed in 2022.
