UK: Lowestoft College Facilities under Spotlight

Lowestoft College’s engineering and maritime facilities were under the spotlight on Friday (March 1) when Skills Minister Matthew Hancock had a tour of the specialist facilities.

Mr Hancock had a whistle-stop tour of some of the College’s facilities including the 18 metre wind turbine tower which was installed just over a year ago to train workers in the wind farm industry. He also watched Uniformed Services students being put through their paces with an emergency evacuation drill in the Training Tank before being wowed by just how realistic the Ship’s Bridge Simulator was.

Mr Hancock also spoke with Engineering Apprentices and watched them at work in the recently upgraded workshop which now boasts state-of-the-art training facilities.

There was also time to meet travel and tourism students and answer their questions.

Simon Summers, Principal at Lowestoft College, said: “We were very pleased that Skills Minister Matthew Hancock spent time with us and was able to see what Lowestoft College offers. By talking to apprentices and students he was able to gain a good insight in to the issues facing them and see just how committed they are to their studies. The visit was also an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the range of courses we offer including those which support the key local industries of Maritime, Offshore and Energy.”

The Minister was joined by Waveney MP Peter Aldous and Leader of Suffolk County Council Cllr Mark Bee.
