German Energy Strategy Will Cost Consumers Significantly

German unit of Vattenfall says that the German energy strategy will hit the consumers’ pockets as costs for new renewable power generation units and networks must be passed on.

Vattenfall Europe chief Tuomo Hatakka told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung that he expects the electricity bill for private customers to rise by up to 30 percent to 2020. This is because German consumers are obligated to pay rising subsidies for renewables which are above market rates.

It is estimated that the bill will go up to more than 5 cents in 2013, with the expansion of solar panels and wind turbines. If it goes more than 5 cents, it will add EUR 70 to an average household electricity bill in 2012 of EUR 900.
