First Meerwind Monopile Leaves AMBAU Plant in Cuxhaven, Germany

Weighing nearly 570 tonnes, the first monopile for the offshore wind park project Meerwind Süd / Ost has left the AMBAU plant in Cuxhaven. AMBAU is producing 80 foundation sets for the wind park, comprising monopiles and transition pieces, on behalf of Bremerhaven-based WindMW GmbH.

The monopiles for the 80 offshore wind energy units of the 3.6 MW class planned for installation and operation at a site 23 km north of the island of Helgoland in the North Sea comprise almost 50,000 tonnes of steel on their own.

Jens Assheuer, Managing Director of WindMW GmbH, is confident: “With the commitment of all project participants we are sure that we will be able to meet the targeted schedule.”

Construction of the park is planned to begin in September 2012, commissioning at the end of 2013. In future, the 80 offshore wind energy units will be able to supply 360,000 households with electricity.

WindMW GmbH is a joint venture of the Blackstone Group and Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH.
