Wind Energy Giants to Receive GBP 250 Million (UK)

Two wind energy giants receive up to GBP 250 million a year in subsidies, reports North West Evening Mail

A Swedish company, Vattenfall, which owns six windfarms in Britain, including the Ormonde windfarm off Walney, will receive GBP 139 million.

Dong Energy, a wind power company from Denmark, with four windfarms – two off Walney, will get GBP 110 million.

Some think that the government should slash the subsidies and use them to support local projects.

David Marcus, a councillor on Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria County Council said, “The subsidies are too high and I think the money should be used to support local communities. I’m not a great fan of windfarms…but I do think the subsidies should be used, in part, to support the local economy.”
