Sassnitz to Become Base Port for Offshore Wind Farm (Germany)

The Sassnitz will expand into a base port for a planned offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

The offshore terminal with a 410 meter long quay wall is planned to be completed by the summer 2012, port of Sassnitz said on Thursday.

For the purpose of the project, a six-hectare area will be created, from where the components for the wind turbines will be shipped.

About 32 miles north of Rügen the energy company, EnBW, wants to build its second offshore wind farm “Baltic 2”.

With 80 wind turbines, it is almost four times as large as “Baltic 1” and it will produce about 1.2 billion kWh, six times as much electricity as the pilot system “Baltic 1”.

Right next to the offshore terminal, a berthing place has also been expanded, which will be used by supply and service vessels working on the offshore wind farm.
