Vattenfall Gets BSH Green Light for 630 MW Nordlicht 2 Offshore Wind Farm

Project Updates

Vattenfall has received the green light from Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) for the construction and operation of the Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

On 29 October, BSH granted planning approval for Vattenfall’s 630 MW Nordlicht 2, which will be built in area N-6.6, located more than 84 kilometres from the East Frisian island of Borkum and at least 96 kilometres from the German mainland.

The wind farm will consist of a total of 44 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW. Vestas will supply V236-15.0 MW units to both Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farms under a contract signed with the developer in April 2025.

Nordlicht 2 will be connected to the onshore power grid via the NOR-6-3 grid connection system, which consists of the BorWin delta converter platform and the high-voltage direct current transmission line BorWin4.

Vattenfall made the final investment decision on the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms at the beginning of this year and performed the unexploded ordnance (UXO) removal ahead of construction activities.

The developer already signed contracts with Tier 1 suppliers at the beginning of this year.

Offshore construction will first get underway at Nordlicht 1, with the wind turbines expected to be installed in 2027 and the first wind farm fully operational in 2028.

Once operational, the 1.6 GW Nordlicht cluster, comprising the 980 MW Nordlicht 1 and the 630 MW Nordlicht 2, is expected to generate approximately 6 TWh of electricity annually.
