First wind turbine at Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm in the Netherlands

100th Turbine Rises at World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm

100 out of the 140 Siemens Gamesa 11.0-200 DD wind turbines have been installed at the 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid, the world’s first subsidy-free offshore wind farm and soon to be the largest offshore wind farm in operation.

”We have finished the installation of offshore wind turbine number 100 at the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm. When fully completed later this year, the wind farm will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm in service and will produce enough green energy to power 1.5 million Dutch households a year,” Cadeler said in a social media post.

”These giant 11MW turbines have a rotor diameter of 200 meters and the area when turning in the wind is roughly the same size as four football pitches. If the weather permits, the team onboard Wind Osprey can install such an 11MW offshore wind turbine in less than 24 hours.”

Wind Osprey transported the first turbine from Sif’s Maasvlakte 2 site in the Port of Rotterdam and installed it at the site some 20 kilometres off the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland in mid-April last year.

This milestone also marked the first time an SG 11.0-200 DD unit was installed offshore, becoming the largest and most powerful wind turbine to be installed on an offshore wind farm.

The wind farm delivered the first power to the Dutch grid at the beginning of August. The full commissioning of the wind farm is slated for this summer.

Hollandse Kust Zuid is owned by Vattenfall, BASF, and Allianz. Vattenfall is leading the development of the project.
