Norwegian Developer Secures Site for Gigascale Wind Project Off South Korea

Deep Wind Offshore has secured site exclusivity for gigawatt-scale wind development in the Southern Sea offshore South Korea.

A few months ago, the Norwegian developer signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with East West Power to collaborate on four projects totalling more than 4 GW of floating and bottom-fixed offshore wind in South Korea.

After obtaining the permits to occupy public water and securing exclusivity to project sites for GW-scale offshore wind development, Deep Wind Offshore entered into an agreement with local technology supplier Seatech for the supply of two floating Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems.

“The awarded permits and agreement with Seatech are great achievement for Deep Wind Offshore in South Korea. This supports our strategy of providing clean electricity for coastal communities at the same time as paving the way for local supply chain in our projects”, said Knut Vassbotn, CEO of Deep Wind Offshore.

The first of the two floating LiDARs is scheduled to be deployed in the fourth quarter of this year on the project site where it will collect wind data for at least one year, the developer said.

When the wind measurement campaign is completed, Deep Wind Offshore plans to apply for an Electricity Business Licence and continue towards construction permits and financial investment decision for the project.

In December 2021, Deep Wind Offshore was awarded a EUR 1 million grant by Enova for a project looking to optimise the entire architecture for a floating wind farm, with the aim of developing a more cost-effective floating wind farm design in the Utsira Nord area in Norway.

The same month, the company partnered with EDF Renewables to bid in the offshore wind auction in Norway, where the new 50/50 joint venture will submit applications for the development of two commercial-scale projects in the tendered areas, Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø II.
