VIDEO: Virginia Collaborative Achaeological Survey

In September 2013, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) held a commercial lease sale for an area of 112,799 acres 23.5 nautical miles from the Virginia Beach coastline.

Dominion Virginia Power was the highest bidders for this area with USD 1.6 million.

Now, archaeologists and scientific divers from the UNC Coastal Studies Institute, BOEM, East Carolina University and NOAA’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary have completed a cultural resource survey within the wind energy area proposed offshore Virginia.

During the project, 24 sites were surveyed using both remote sensing and divers deployed on the sites.
