ForWind Organizes 'Wind Energy and Impact of Turbulence on Conversion Process' Conference (Germany)

EUROMECH Colloquium 528 will be hosting a “Wind Energy and the Impact of Turbulence on the Conversion Process” event from 22 to 24 February at the University of Oldenburg.

The conference has been organized by ForWind, the Centre for Wind Energy Research of the University of Oldenburg, Hanover and Bremen. More than 80 experts from 17 nations are expected to attend this event.

Honorable guests will be the Oldenburg physicist and ForWind Board member Prof. Dr. Joachim Peinke and Prof. Dr. Stefan Ivanell, high school teacher for Energy Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden).

„Turbulence is an everyday phenomenon that could be very difficult to calculate, especially in the field of wind turbulence we poorly understand. The conference focuses on these issues and links turbulence case studies with the rapidly growing field of wind energy industry”, said Peinke.

Turbulence and gustiness are characterized by fluctuating wind conditions on small, medium and large scales. As a result, wind turbines operating for 20 years are exposed to 100 million wind gusts.

International scientists have been devoted to the questions of aerodynamics, meteorology and turbulence in wind farm atmosphere. They have also examined how turbulence can be influenced and controlled on rotor blades, or how fatigue, caused by changing loads on wind turbines, can be detected at an early stage.

Other topics that will be presented at the conference are the flow conditions on individual wind turbines and their interaction within large offshore wind farms, as they were built in the North and Baltic Seas. The experts will present the latest research in laser-optical measurement techniques (eg MultiLIDAR).
