New Energy Secretary to Inaugurate Walney Offshore Wind Farm (UK)

Lib Dem MP Ed Davey, the new energy secretary, will today inaugurate the world’s biggest offshore wind farm, reports Bloomberg.

The launch will reportedly mark the start of a £33 billion push to expand the sea-based generation of electricity.

Walney offshore wind farm consists of 102 Siemens’ 3.6MW wind turbines, with the total capacity of 367.2MW. The £1.2bn wind farm is located approximately 15km off the Walney Island, Cumbria, in the Irish Sea, UK.

The companies behind Walney (UK) Offshore Windfarms Limited are DONG Energy (50.1%), SSE (25.1%) and a consortium of PGGM and Dutch Ampere Equity Fund, managed by Triodos Investment Management (24.8%). DONG Energy is the leading partner in the construction and operational phases of the Walney Offshore Windfarms.
