India Calls for Better Involvement in Ocean-Based Industries

Harsh Vardhan, Indian Union minister for science, technology and earth sciences stressed out the need for a better exploration of ocean energy.

During his talk at the inaugural programme of the Golden Jubilee year celebration of National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Vardhan said: “We must move fast to grab India’s legitimate share in the emerging ocean-based industries, which include off-shore wind, tidal and wave energy, offshore extraction of oil and gas in deep sea, seabed mining, ocean monitoring and control.”

“Science has taught us that all things began in the Ocean, and so it is to the ocean that we must turn for the future”, he added.

These comments are important for India as they come at a time when China is trying to harness the power of Indian Ocean.
