Correction: Wikinger Scheduled for Spring 2016, Says Iberdrola

Spanish energy group Iberdrola will start the in-water construction phase of its Wikinger offshore wind farm in spring 2016.

The company started working on the project six months later than expected due to delays in grid capacity allocation by Germany’s federal network agency BNA.

“In January, we finally secured the capacity allocation so we can begin,” said CEO of Iberdrola Renovables Offshore Germany, Jürgen Blume.

The wind farm is located off the coast of the island of Rügen covering an area of around 34km².

With a total investment of almost €1.4 billion, Wikinger will comprise 70 turbines with a total capacity of 350MW. Once in operation, the wind farm will be able to produce clean electricity for more than 350,000 German households.
