Germany: Lower Saxony Prime Minister at the Official Opening of Riffgat OWF

Over the weekend, Germany’s first commercial offshore wind farm Riffgat was officially opened. Lower Saxony Prime Minister Stephen Weil attended the ceremony.

During a sightseeing flight, EWE’s Chairman of the Board, Werner Brinker, showed the wind turbines to Prime Minister Weil, who said that this is a pioneering project for future technologies.

The reason for the opening of the wind farm without it producing electricity yet is the very lengthy recovery process of ammunition contaminated sites, which caused the delay in connection to the power grid.

Prime Minister Stephen Weil congratulated those responsible for the completion of the construction and called for an expansion of offshore wind farms. Offshore wind energy is a base load demand and hence, the technology with which Germany needs to compensate for the shutdown of nuclear power.
