Denmark: DONG Uses 'Floating Hotel' to Utilise Periods with Good Weather

While the installation activity at Anholt wind farm is intensified, the personnel logistics is also optimised in the week before Christmas. On 1 December 2012, the floating hotel Wind Perfection arrived at Grenaa Harbour to be ready to take its position in the wind farm to act as floating hotel for the many technicians involved in the installation and commissioning of the wind turbines.

This work is performed by Siemens’ personnel, but DONG Energy also used the floating hotel as it reduces the transport time and makes it possible to utilise the periods with good weather to a maximum.

So far, the service vessels have sailed the technicians from Grenaa Harbour to the wind farm, but in the future, the service vessels will transport the technicians between the wind turbine positions and the floating hotel, which is capable of anchoring close to the activities.

The distance from north to south in the wind farm is 20 kilometres, and as the wind turbine installation started in the southern part of the wind farm closest to the base in Grenaa, the distance and consequently the time spent on transport will increase as the installation work moves north in the wind farm.

Wind Perfection is the former MS Christian IV which operated a regular service between Denmark and Norway for the shipping company Color Line. The vessel is 153 metres long and has more than 150 well-equipped cabins with bath, toilet, TV and Internet. Furthermore, the vessel has modern common areas, eg restaurant, fitness room, cinema, conference rooms and lounge.
