Germany: Nordic Yards Presents New Vessel

Nordic Yards company has presented a new type of vessel on Thursday at the “Wind & Maritime” conference in Rostock, the Ostsee-zeitung reported.

It is “a wind farm construction vessel of the second generation,” said Olaf Wunderlich (49), Deputy Managing Director of Nordic Yards Holding GmbH.

So far, the offshore wind turbine parts have been individually transported to the building site and assembled in the open sea. The new concept aims to assemble the tower and turbine blades on land.

Industry experts estimate that 240 specialized vessels will be needed just for the construction and maintenance of the planned German wind farms.

“We need skilled workers,” said Wunderlich. Around 100 new workers will be employed in this sector, mostly project engineers, designers, planners and technicians.
