The Netherlands: MeteoGroup Doubles Market Share in Renewables Industry

MeteoGroup, Europe’s largest private weather forecasting company, is a leading player in the provision of wind and power forecasts for the renewables market and has doubled its market share in the past year.

MeteoGroup has proven experience in the wind energy market and has supplied wind forecasts to major contractors throughout Europe for a number of years. The company’s recent expansion in the renewables market is largely driven by substantial growth in customer demand for power production forecasts.

MeteoGroup’s Research and Development team is at the forefront of meteorological innovation and has developed an advanced technique for integrating observations into its forecast system, resulting in improved power forecast accuracy. This investment in R&D ensures MeteoGroup is always highly competitive in forecast trials and has a proven track record of supplying the most accurate wind and power production forecasts on the market.

Amongst the major European contracts awarded to MeteoGroup in the past year is a multi-year contract with the UK’s National Grid, one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world, to supply deterministic and probabilistic hub height wind forecasts for over 30 onshore and offshore wind farms in the UK.

Other notable successes have been in the offshore market and, in line with growth in this area, MeteoGroup launched MeteoGroup Offshore in September 2011, a division dedicated solely to the provision of metocean forecasting services. In the last 12 months, MeteoGroup has secured major offshore contracts, including weather services for RWE’s wind farm installation off the coast of North Wales and in the German North Sea, survey and research work for the Q10 wind farm in the Netherlands and work with tidal technology specialist OpenHydro for the first commercial scale tidal turbine in Brittany, France. MeteoGroup Offshore is now one of the biggest metocean forecasting divisions in the world and enables MeteoGroup to continue to develop and enhance the services it offers to the offshore market.

MeteoGroup is exhibiting at EWEA 16th-19th April 2012, Stand number C3-C61.
