European Commision Invests in Wind-Wave Project

European Commision Invests in Wind Wave Project

European Commission is funding EUR 6 million worth wind-wave project with EUR 4.3 million.

The goal of this project is to develop a platform that will harness wind and wave power and on-site convert the surplus energy into hydrogen.

The project builds on already on-going R&D and commercial activities of a partnership involving the European leading industrial and academic partners from 5 countries within the fields of renewable energy, fish farming, hydrogen generation, maritime transports and related research disciplines.

Apart from combining different power generation activities into a shared multi-use platform, H2OCEAN is a pioneer project that will transmit offshore electricity through hydrogen.

This approach can help solve great challenges of generating power offshore:

  • Grid imbalance problem inherent to current offshore renewable energy systems
  • Highly costly subsea cable transmission systems

The project is scheduled for 3 years, until December 31, 2014.
