NYIT Hosts Talks on Alternative Energy Technologies for Northeast and Long Island (USA)

Floating wind farms, ocean wave power, hydrofracking, and the state of climate science will be among the featured topics discussed at NYIT’s sixth annual Energy Conference on Thursday, June 2, at the NYIT de Seversky Mansion in Old Westbury.

The conference, “Beyond Carbon: Offshore Energy and Technologies,” brings together government, business, industry, and academic experts from NYIT and other universities. The group of energy specialists will examine moving away from carbon-based fuels to cleaner – though often controversial – alternative energy sources.

“This timely one-day conference will explore the fundamental science and cutting edge applications of various clean technologies for Long Island and the Northeast,” said Nada Anid, Ph.D., NYIT’s dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. “The conference should be of equal interest to venture capitalists, the scientific community, policy makers and the general public in the NY Metropolitan area and beyond.”

This year’s conference comes as New Yorkers grapple with gas prices that have surpassed $4 a gallon. NYIT experts in alternative energy are available immediately for interviews. They include:

* Robert N. Amundsen, director of the master’s in energy management program

* Greg Banhazi, director of business development and special projects and a 25-year veteran of private industry alternate energy development.

* Herbert Fox, chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

* Stanley M. Greenwald, professor, chairperson, and founder of the Department of Environmental Technology

* Sarah Meyland, co-director of the Center for Energy, Environment and Economics

* Laurence Silverstein, Associate Professor, College of Arts and Sciences

* Frank S. Zeman, director of the Center for Metropolitan Sustainability

The conference will feature a keynote address by Dr. Monique Leclerc, University of Georgia, Laboratory for Environmental Physics. NYIT will present an honorary award to climate science pioneer, Dr. Wallace S. Broecker from Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, for his life’s work in exploring the ocean’s systems that help shape our planet’s climate. Conference speakers include:

* Dr. Habib Dagher, University of Maine, Deep C Wind Consortium

* Jonathan Colby, Verdant Power

* Michael Raftery, Stevens Institute of Technology

* Markian Melnyk, Atlantic Wind Connection

* Anita Thompkins, US EPA

* Michael Deering, LIPA

A forum for green debates for the past five years in New York and globally (China and South Korea) and the birthplace of the first solar carport on Long Island in 2009, NYIT is a local and global leader in clean energy initiatives. NYIT students have designed solar homes for the Solar Decathlon competition and a “green” airplane hangar for the USS Intrepid. Current NYIT research includes a solar radiation study of the Manhattan campus to reduce energy consumption, carbon sequestration, and a study of Long Island’s carbon footprint. NYIT’s “Greenprint” program includes a fleet of electric and hybrid cars, a biodiesel energy project, and a bike share program.
