The monopiles will support the 100 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD wind turbines installed on Dogger Bank, some 195 kilometres off the UK’s northeast coast.

Now under construction, Sofia is 100 per cent owned by RWE.

”After several successful projects for Van Oord such as Gemini, Deutsche Bucht and Fryslân, we are pleased to have again been selected as supplier for this excellent European project,” said Robert Dreves, Managing Director at EEW SPC.

To be manufactured in Rostock, the monopiles for Sofia will have a diameter of up to 8.8 metres with a length of up to 91.8 metres, for which EEW SPC will process approximately 130,000 tonnes of steel. Production at the Rostock site is scheduled to begin in June 2023.

Van Oord is the EPCI contractor for the inter-array cables and monopile foundations for the Sofia offshore wind project under a contract won at the beginning of 2021.

Offshore installation work on Sofia is expected to begin in 2023, and the project is due to be completed in 2026.
