VIDEO: Sandbank Substation Nearing Completion

The offshore substation for the 288MW Sandbank offshore wind farm is almost complete and should be ready for load out by early April, Martin Zappe, the project’s Technical Manager said in a video interview shared by Vattenfall.

The substation is undergoing final onshore tests in Aalborg, Denmark, Zappe said.

The video also explains the role of an offshore substation and how one operates.

The Sandbank offshore wind farm, a joint-venture between Vattenfall (51%) and Stadtwerke München (49%), is located 110km off the German North Sea coast, 90 km west of the island Sylt.

When completed in 2017, the Sandbank wind farm will have 72 Siemens wind turbines in the 4MW class and the offshore substation.

The 288MW wind farm will be able to supply more than 400,000 households with renewable electricity.
