Trianel Wind Farm Borkum Operational

The developer of the Trianel Wind Farm Borkum has reported that the offshore wind farm is now operational, with all 40 turbines feeding power to the grid.

The 40 wind turbines have a joint output of 200 MW and are located around 45 kilometers off the coast of the island of Borkum in the North Sea.

The offshore construction of the wind farm started in September 2011 with the installation of a tripod foundation. “At that time, we were breaking new ground, and today, we are proud to have completed this pioneer project together with our shareholders, suppliers and employees,” said Klaus Horstick, Managing Director of Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co. KG.

Due to issues with the grid connection, the initially planned commissioning date was delayed. “Following the successful commissioning of the last turbine, we are now in the test operation phase. In August, the turbines will transfer to regular operation,” said Horstick. During the trial operation, technical details are checked and tested for all phases of operation of the AREVA Wind M5000 turbines.

With the completion of the first stage of the Trianel Wind Farm Borkum, essential prerequisites for the second stage have been created. Horstick said that he expects the decision on the second phase with a further 200 MW in 2016.
