The test site is a specially marked area about 1.5 km off the northern shore of the bay, close to Spiddal, where ocean energy conversion devices and new marine instruments and technologies can be tested.

This Mobilis DB800 buoy has been configured with an array of sensors that will allow the collection and monitoring of environmental data on the test site (oceanographic and meteorological), which are of extreme importance for the ocean energy industry and for developers alike.

All of the data is continuously transmitted to shore via wireless communication links set up on the test site; this enables SmartBay, their users and the general public to freely assess the data via SmartBay’s data portal. The deployment of this buoy on the test site is part of SmartBay’s mission to acquire and provide the research community and the maritime industries with accurate environmental conditions in Galway Bay.
