Estonia Eyes Baltic Sea’s Offshore Wind Possibilities

Offshore wind plans for Estonia were discussed at the country’s first offshore wind conference held on the 29th and 30th of October, 2013 in Hiiumaa.

Wind energy producers are looking at offshore wind possibilities in the Baltic Sea off Hiiumaa and Pärnumaa, according to Estonian Public Broadcasting news site. Environmental and other studies are not yet carried out, so the plans are still in their concept stages.

The Estonian Wind Power Cluster organized the first Estonian Offshore Wind Energy Conference providing a platform for 15 industry experts from the neighboring countries to deliver speeches on various topics from the offshore wind sector and share their experiences. Delegates had an opportunity to learn about case studies from Sweden and Belgium, Estonian offshore projects, opportunities in offshore wind energy industry and security of supply.

Moreover, maritime spatial planning was discussed, as this is the first time that it is conducted in Estonia, specifically, in counties of Hiiumaa and Pärnumaa, where offshore wind projects are planned to be developed.
