Germany: SüdWestStrom Gives Up on BARD Offshore 1 Wind Farm

SüdWestStrom Windpark GmbH &Co. KG is not buying the 400 MW offshore wind farm BARD Offshore 1.

Delays in the completion of the wind farm and the modified risk assessment of offshore wind farms have led to a decision that the holding company SüdWestStrom Windpark GmbH &Co. KG and the project company SüdWestStrom StadtKraftWerk / WV Offshore GmbH & Co. KG will dissolve at the end of the year. The decision was made by the representatives of the 65 stakeholders on 20 November 2012 at a meeting in Stuttgart.

“We regret that we cannot buy the wind farm. These delays in the construction and the unpredictable risks of completion were crucial for our decision,” says Bettina Morlok, director of the SüdWestStrom Windpark GmbH & Co. KG.

The shareholders of the SüdWestStrom Windpark GmbH & Co. KG, which was founded in 2009 for the acquisition of the BARD 1 offshore wind farm, decided in 2010 to buy the wind farm, thus contributing to the country’s transition to renewable energy. Originally the completion was scheduled for 2011, while now the offshore wind farm is expected to be finished in late 2013.
