The Switch: Good Strategy, Business Concept Lead to Growth (Finland)

Jukka-Pekka Mäkinen, President and CEO of The Switch, writes about the company’s growth, which is an achievement of a good strategy and business concept:

Last month’s HUSUM WindEnergy 2012 exhibition gave us firm proof that the wind power business is moving ahead again. We’re seeing movement from all different directions and positive signs that the worst may now be over. Bigger and better turbines are currently being developed to respond to future market requirements.

The Switch captured a lot of attention by revealing the 3 MW FusionDrive® in its actual size, one of the few launches at the entire exhibition. This was very important for The Switch, as it puts us into a technology leadership position not only for our own components but also for the whole turbine drive train. The special FusionDrive® launch was noticed by many, which led us to continue having a number of high-level meetings with customers and new partners throughout the week at our stand. This product spearheads our offering, as the industry is increasingly choosing the medium-speed generator for new turbines.

Another solid sign of upcoming opportunities was the zero series order that we received from PROKON for 10 direct-drive 3 MW generator and converter packages. This is a great opportunity to deepen the cooperation with PROKON and continue to grow along with their ambitious plans. The first two prototypes will be ready for testing at the end of this year.

In many ways, the exhibition validates our place in the market. Our products are really well positioned in the industry. Our strategy and business concept have proven to be the winning ones. Working with our partners has made it possible to survive the sudden stop in the growth of the Chinese business and the overall sluggishness in the renewable energy industry at large.

This slow period in the business has also given us a chance to improve our processes and ways of working. As well, we have been able to build closer relationships with our customers and build new, exciting opportunities with leading turbine companies. And now we are ready and enthusiastic to continue leading our customers to transition to new technologies that further lower the cost of energy and make renewable energy the choice for the future.
