The WindSentinel FLiDAR by AXYS Technologies will measure and collect data on wind speeds and sea conditions at the 122,405-acre lease area until June 2021, Kitty Hawk Offshore Wind, the project developer, said.

Offshore aerial surveys and geophysical surveys are currently ongoing at the site as well, the developer said.

Located more than 27 miles from the Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk is the first wind lease area to be awarded offshore North Carolina.

The area has a potential generating capacity of 2,500 MW.

The geophysical surveys where the first phase of the project will be sited were completed at the end of last year.
