Great Potential of Isle of Man in Renewable Energy Sector (UK)

The Isle of Man has the potential to be significant in renewable industry as it was mentioned last week at the opening of a £1.2 billion world’s largest wind farm in Barrow-in-Furness.

Laurence Skelly, a member of the Department of Economic Development, emphasized the opportunity for the Isle of Man to become a great supplier of clean power.

On the other side, the Steam Packet expressed concerns for a possible negative impact of wind farms on ferry routes.

Mr. Skelly was on the meeting with the UK’s Energy Secretary, Ed Davey, and they talked about the Island of Man capacities.

Dr Ken Milne, the Isle of Man’s senior manager for Energy Policy stated: ‘Windfarms in and around our seas could be cabled to a central substation in the Isle of Man and connected to the UK grid. It is technically feasible and could provide a major economic boost to the island in terms of investment, jobs and income generation. It is something we are looking at very seriously.’
