Under the contract, the Danish company will provide the services for nine of Vattenfall’s offshore wind farms located in the North Sea, Irish Sea and Baltic Sea.

According to Vento Maritime, the decision to use the Lightning Alert Service comes after two trial periods.

The company explains that its system offers a personalized service when it comes to thunderstorms and lightning risk as it not only monitors lightning strikes but also the cloud development and formation of potential thunderstorms.

“This may be confusing for some, but not all potential thunderclouds cause lightning. Therefore, in order to avoid first strike being right over site, it is not enough only to observe detected lightning strikes, as most competitors do, but also the clouds must be monitored,” Vento Maritime said.
