Germans Protest against Renewable Energy Sources Act Reform

Over 12,000 people united in Berlin on May 10, on a demonstration against planned reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), proposed by the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

The protest march started at Berlin’s central station, continued through the city center and ended in front of the CDU’s headquarters.

The demonstrators voiced their opposition from land and water. Namely, around 120 boats, canoes and rafts on the river Spree joined the demonstration against the Federal Government’s plans to thwart the expansion of renewable energy sources.

At the closing rally in front of the CDU party headquarters, Hubert Weiger, Chairman of  German Association for Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND), stated: “The plans of the Federal Government to amend the Renewable Energy Sources Act delay the energy transition. The Parliament must pass a law that accelerates the energy transition instead of the one that chokes it.”
