USA: Edgartown Updates FERC on Tidal Energy Project

The town of has released an update on the 20MW tidal energy project located on the east side of Martha’s Vineyard to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

In the reports Edgartown stated that it is making progress on the project, which is being developed in two phases, a pilot 5 MW project followed by a full-scale deployment of 20 MW.

This update follows a permit released in August 2011 by FERC for the Edgartown-Nantucket Tidal Energy Power Plant Project.

The 5MW pilot project includes 13 tidal turbines installed in Muskeget Channel at water depths of 25 feet.

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, HMMH, on behalf of the Town, is managing a comprehensive study of the marine environment in Muskeget Channel and assessing the potential impacts of the tidal project on indicator species and habitats.
