AREG Comments PwC Report (UK)

Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) comments the PwC report that was published yesterday (Wednesday, November 2) about Aberdeen’s potential to be a global energy centre of excellence and generate more than £600billion in revenues.

Chief operating officer of Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), Morag McCorkindale, said: “This is an encouraging endorsement of Aberdeen City and Shire’s world-leading energy capability. It also recognises the opportunities that AREG and its membership, including private and public sector organisations, have been striving towards.

“We have made significant progress to build the region’s position as a global energy hub. The region is fast capitalising on its industrial-scale oil and gas expertise and know-how by diversifying into the sustainable energy sector but we agree that we must not be complacent. We must continue our drive to secure business in this new industry and add value.

“Key local companies are rapidly emerging as leaders in marine renewables. An important factor is that AREG – along with partners Vattenfall and Technip – is developing a flagship project, the ground-breaking European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC). The EOWDC would accelerate the development of offshore wind power by proving the next generation of technology in a real time offshore environment. It would also create jobs and economic benefit by attracting scientists, researchers, engineers, offshore wind supply chain companies and future investment. This will add vital skills and infrastructure to our existing energy industry base.

“As a result, our companies will win new business and secure and create new jobs. All in all, it’s a very exciting time for our industry and our economy. Certainly, AREG and its members have proven an appetite for the challenge.”
