ClassNK Grants Approval for High-Corrosion-Resistant Wire Cable for Floating Wind Mooring

Technology

ClassNK has issued Approval of Manufacturing Procedure (AMP) and Type Approval certificates for a high-corrosion-resistant semi-parallel wire cable (SPWC) developed by Japanese company KOBELCO Wire.

ClassNK

According to ClassNK, the certification confirms the product meets the requirements set out in its guidelines, marking the first time the society has approved a high-corrosion-resistant SPWC.

The newly approved cable consists of polyethylene-coated strands made from 7 millimetre-diameter galvanised steel wires. It is designed to deliver enhanced fatigue strength and corrosion resistance, positioning it as a potential alternative for mooring lines used in floating offshore wind turbine structures.

The SPWC is expected to offer different material characteristics compared to conventional steel chains and synthetic fibre ropes, while allowing flexibility in mooring configurations.

Following an application from KOBELCO Wire, ClassNK carried out a technical evaluation based on its Guidelines for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, verified compliance with applicable requirements, and subsequently issued the certificates.
