This webinar reports highly significant findings relating to the frequency and severity of complex wind shear anomalies known as low level jets (LLJs) in the offshore environment. These can impact production and introduce high shear loads that may lead to accelerated component failure. LLJs are seen to cause loads that are more severe than the fatigue loads and more frequent than the extreme loads currently considered in wind turbine design guidelines.
Successful deployment of offshore wind power will necessitate a deeper understanding and accommodation of these phenomena in wind turbine design codes, control strategies, operations and maintenance than is currently the case.
