Van Oord
Sustainable EPC and marine contractor
Climate change and the need to reduce CO2 emissions are drivers for the rising demand of renewable energy sources. With proven experience and an impressive 20-year track record, Van Oord is leading the way in the energy transition towards renewable energy by constructing offshore wind projects. We furnish all-round solutions, often as turnkey projects including engineering, procurement, and construction in order to assume full responsibility for entire projects for our clients. We focus on Balance of Plant contracts (all supporting components and auxiliary systems other than the wind turbines) and on Transport and Installation projects. We also provide services such as scour protection and inter array cable installation.

Our leading position in offshore wind was in 2019 displayed in the projects Norther, Deutsche Bucht and the Borssele sites III & IV and V. For the Norther project, Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel Aeolus installed all foundations and turbines. Our cable-installation vessel Nexus installed all inter array cables and the export cable. In a record time of just 7 months Belgium’s largest offshore wind project was completed. Norther now supplies sustainable energy to 400,000 households and contributes thereby significantly to Belgium’s environmental targets.
The installation of the 77 monopolies for the Borssele III & IV and 2 for the innovation site Borssele V is in full swing. At the Borssele site V we are implementing and testing new technologies like the Slip Joint, a connection between the monopile and transition piece. Investments in innovations are a priority for us. Apart from the Slip Joint, we are also testing Thermally Sprayed Aluminum, Eco Scour Protection and the Oval Cable Entry Hole. All very promising innovations that can help us staying frontrunner in offshore wind in the future.
Besides our activities in Europe, we have also expanded to Asia. Van Oord has been awarded the contract for the cable installation works at the Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind farms. As the Taiwanese offshore wind market begins to expand, Van Oord is committed to support the further development of the Taiwanese supply chain and marine workforce by sharing our experience and knowledge in these fields. We will work closely together with Taiwanese engineering service providers and support vessel owners to complete this cable installation project successfully.
For the year ahead, we have several projects in preparation and in execution, besides above mentioned projects, such as the nearshore windfarm Fryslân, in the Netherlands. Never before has such a large wind park been built in a lake in the world. Also further investments in our equipment and innovations are on the agenda.
