Germany: Dong Starts Norddeich Facility Construction

Germany Dong Starts Norddeich Facility Construction

On an area of 30.000 square meters, DONG Energy, the world’s market leader in offshore wind, is building a new location.

The harbour in Norddeich will primarily be used for construction supervision and secondary as base for the service and maintenance of the German offshore wind farms. From Norddeich, the crew vessels will sail out to the construction site. However, the foundations and turbines for DONG Energy’s first German offshore wind farm, Borkum Riffgrund 1, will be sailed from Aalborg and Esbjerg, respectively. The Norddeich harbour is located at precisely the right distance from Borkum Riffgrund 1, as well as also from the other wind farm projects planned by DONG Energy. This ideal distance was the crucial point for deciding in favour of Norddeich. Furthermore, the city has an excellent infrastructure on land, and the nearby airfield offers good travel conditions.

In April 2013, the construction activities will start with earth works. Later on, the first building, the construction site office, will be erected. This is followed by the construction of the O&M building, expected to be finished in the third quarter 2013. Roughly 35 DONG Energy employees will be stationed at Norddeich in order to operate the first wind farm from 2014 onwards. From summer onwards, the first offshore activities for Borkum Riffgrund 1 will be initiated by bringing the offshore substation out to sea. The Borkum Riffgrund 1 Wind Farm is located 54 km from the coast, 37 km northwest of the island Borkum.
