NYK Line has ordered a newbuild service operation vessel (SOV) from PaxOcean Group to support offshore wind construction, and operations and maintenance (O&M) activities in Taiwan and across the Asia-Pacific region.
The vessel will be based on Ulstein’s SX222 design, featuring the company’s TWIN X-STERN hull, and will be constructed at PaxOcean’s Graha yard in Batam, Indonesia.
The SOV measures approximately 89.6 metres in length and 19.2 metres in beam, and will accommodate up to 120 people. It will be equipped with a dynamic positioning system, a motion-compensated gangway and a motion-compensated crane for personnel and cargo transfers to offshore installations.
Ulstein said the vessel will be prepared for methanol and fully electric operations. Ulstein Design & Solutions will provide the vessel design and engineering package, with Ulstein Power & Control to supply a DC-based hybrid power and automation system integrating power generation, energy storage, propulsion and control systems.
The SOV, scheduled for delivery in 2029, will have double classification by DNV and CR and sail under the Taiwan flag.
NYK Line said the vessel is expected to be deployed on offshore wind projects in Taiwan and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region through a partnership with Taiwan-based IOVTEC and Hsin Chien Marine (HCM).
NYK acquired an equity stake in IOVTEC in March 2025. The Taiwan-based company provides services for offshore wind projects, including marine surveys, temporary power supply, and operations and maintenance of topside and subsea components, including cables and offshore substations.
NYK Line also operates an SOV business in Europe through Northern Offshore Group.
