RWE has taken the final investment decision (FID) to build a 400 MW/1,100 MWh battery energy storage system at its Moerdijk power station in the Netherlands as part of the system integration solutions for the 795 MW OranjeWind offshore wind farm being developed with TotalEnergies.
The battery will comprise 208 lithium-ion battery containers and will be able to deliver its full 400 MW output for almost three hours. Construction is scheduled to start in due course, with commissioning planned for the second quarter of 2028, RWE said on 21 September.
OranjeWind, also known as Hollandse Kust West VII, is being built approximately 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast and will comprise 53 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines.
Offshore construction has already started, with monopile installation currently underway.
Turbine installation is planned for 2027, and the wind farm is scheduled to become operational in 2028.
The new battery will be connected to the national grid through the existing substation at RWE’s Moerdijk power plant. Under capacity steering agreements with transmission system operator TenneT, it will be dispatched to relieve grid congestion in Noord-Brabant and create additional capacity for parties currently on the grid connection waiting list. The battery will also provide grid services, including instantaneous reserve.
RWE already operates a 7.5 MW/11 MWh battery at Moerdijk, also developed as part of OranjeWind’s system integration package, which entered commercial operation in June 2025.
OranjeWind’s system integration package also includes electrolysers, e-boilers and smart charging, as part of the tender requirements for the offshore wind farm site, which RWE secured in 2022.
