Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables (NSORe), a joint venture between Neptun Werft and Smulders, has been awarded a contract by the German transmission system operator (TSO) 50Hertz to build a 2 GW offshore converter platform for the LanWin3 grid connection project in the North Sea.

The contract follows the June 2026 award to NSORe and Siemens Energy for the LanWin6 grid connection project, also comprising a 2 GW offshore converter platform.

Neptun Werft says the value attributable to NSORe for the two platforms is about EUR 2.5 billion.

Siemens Energy will supply the high-voltage components for LanWin3, while NSORe will handle the system design, procurement, construction, onshore and offshore installation, and commissioning of the platform.

The topside will be built at NSORe’s production facilities at the Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany, while Smulders will manufacture the steel jacket at its yard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands.

50Hertz awarded Siemens Energy the high-voltage technology contract for LanWin3 in 2024. The TSO has now amended the steel construction and platform scope, with the order for the platform relocated to Germany.

LanWin3 will connect an offshore wind farm in the North Sea to the German grid. Its onshore converter station will be located near Mühlenbeck, close to Schwerin. The LanWin3 and LanWin6 connections will be linked to the NordOstLink HVDC transmission corridor.

Back in 2023, 50Hertz awarded several contracts to power cable manufacturers NKT and Prysmian, with NKT’s scope covering onshore and offshore power cable systems for SuedOstLink+ (SOL+), Ostwind 4, DC32 (NordOstLink+), LanWin6, and the hybrid interconnector for the German part of the Bornholm Energy Island project.
