Equinor to Deploy Cable Monitoring Tech at 9-Year-Old Offshore Wind Farm

Norway’s energy company Equinor has awarded Proserv with a contract for the deployment of cable monitoring technology at the 402 MW Dudgeon offshore wind farm in the UK.

Proserv’s ECG Business Unit will deploy its advanced monitoring technology to provide continuous visibility of cable and termination health at the project located 32 kilometres off the north Norfolk coast, with deployment scheduled to begin in 2027.

The deal will also see the deployment of Proserv’s Distributed Electrical Sensing (DES) technology, which uses existing fibre infrastructure and passive sensing technology and provides high-fidelity current and voltage measurements across the network, delivering enhanced visibility of electrical performance in remote and difficult-to-access environments, the company said.

The technology is expected to support earlier identification of developing cable and electrical faults, improved visibility of asset health and network performance and long-term reliability of critical electrical infrastructure, reduced risk of unplanned outages and lost generation, more targeted and proactive maintenance, fewer unnecessary offshore interventions, and a more efficient and data-led O&M strategy.

“ECG gives Equinor greater visibility of the condition and performance of its electrical assets, helping identify developing issues before they become costly failures. By combining ECG with DES, we can provide an even richer picture of network performance and give the operator greater confidence in the availability and security of site generation,” said Barry Frost, Director of ECG at Proserv.

“Ultimately, this is about moving from reactive maintenance to proactive asset management reducing risk, improving reliability and helping maximise the value of offshore wind assets over their operational life.”

Since its completion in late 2017, the Dudgeon offshore wind farm has been producing enough clean energy to power more than 430,000 UK homes from its 67 6 MW turbines.

Through the joint venture company Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited, the wind farm is owned by Equinor (operator), Masdar and China Resources.
